History[edit]

Soprano Design was founded in 1994 as a software consulting firm specializing in the emerging industry of object-oriented software development and opened it's North Sydney headquarters in 1997. In 1998 they launched their 'inconcert cell broadcast platform' which was used to count votes on television programs such as Australian Idol and X-Factor Australia.[3]

Soprano's major breakthrough came from their partnership with Telstra. In 2000, Soprano began working with Telstra to enhance their Enhanced Information Services Platform to deliver standard and premium SMS alerts, as well as WAP push alerts and WAP pull services. This product had a 10-year run as a successful product, final version in 2010 (v9).[4] In 2001, Soprano launched The Soprano Corporate Gateway Platform (CGP), this was designed to enable high-volume, mission-critical SMS for Telstra's largest messaging customers. Such as the banking and retail sector.

In 2001, Soprano powered the first mobile payment transaction in Australia and notably, in 2003, Telstra began using Soprano's CGP to support inbound SMS mass voting for the Australian Idol TV show.[5][6][7] In 2006, Soprano launched MEMS, or the Mobile Enterprise Messaging Suite, it was Soprano's entry into SaaS (cloud-hosted) enterprise text messaging. The innovative hierarchical platform design and global capabilities has allowed Soprano to support Fortune 500 customers in Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States. The messages from the MEMS platform are sold through Telstra in Australia, AT&T in the United States, StarHub in Singapore, BT in the United Kingdom and various other mobile-network-operators to enable it's delivery to customers.

In 2014, Soprano entered the Secure Messaging space with the launch of their product 'GAMMA'. GAMMA, or Global Advanced Mobile Messaging Application, was the world's first integrated, secure, encrypted mobile messaging app to combine advanced security features with exciting IP-based interactive messaging while preserving SMS capabilities for last-mile coverage. SOPRANO GAMMA has won numerous awards since its launch.[8] [9][10][11]

In 2016, Soprano attempted to offer itself for an Initial Public Offering on the ASX, with an estimated market capitalisation of AU$300 million, however, had to abort due to negative investor sentiment after the 2016 United States presidential election.[7][12] Also in 2016, Soprano Partnered with Telstra to launch Telstra Integrated Messenger, and Tesltra Smart Messenger [13]

In 2018, Soprano partnered with SMART, a Philippines MNO to deliver MEMS to the Philippines.[14][15]
