Cerro Sosneado is a stratovolcano in the Andes, lying in Argentina just east of the border with Chile. It is located 66 km (41 mi) south of Maipo and about 150 km (93 mi) southeast of Santiago. It has a symmetrical, conical volcanic shape, and is the southernmost 5,000 metre peak in the Andes and in the world (Risco Plateado with 4,999 m that is 18 kilometres further south is just one metre short of that distinction).
The region's climate is transitional between the drier Mediterranean climate of the peaks to the north and the cold, moist climate of Chilean Patagonia. Hence, while less glaciated than Patagonia, it has more permanent snow on the wet, west side than peaks of similar elevation to the north.
