From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

SoulPancake is a media and entertainment company that creates uplifting video content distributed on both digital and traditional platforms. It was founded by actor Rainn Wilson. It was named one of Fast Company's "Most Innovative Companies in Video."[1] SoulPancake was acquired by Participant Media on October 13, 2016. [2]

SoulPancake has a global audience of more than 10 million and more than 700 million video views across its digital platforms.

History[edit]

SoulPancake founders Rainn Wilson, Devon Gundry, and Joshua Homnick, and early employees Shabnam Mogharabi and Golriz Lucina, launched the SoulPancake website in March 2009 as a community platform and space for conversation that explored issues of philosophy, spirituality, and creativity.[3] The site featured discussions, blog posts, questions, creative activities, writing exercises, polls, interviews, columns, videos, and original art by up-and-coming artists, led to the SoulPancake book. In November 2010, “SoulPancake: Chew on Life’s Big Questions” was published by Hyperion Books, and was named a New York Times bestselling title. [4]

In an October 2011 interview for the OWN Network’s Super Soul series [5], Rainn and Oprah Winfrey discussed the mission behind SoulPancake as well as the SoulPancake book. OWN and SoulPancake partnered to develop a series of SoulPancake-themed short interstitials for OWN’s Super Soul Sunday programming featuring man-on-the-street style activations.

In December 2012, OWN aired “Oprah and Rainn Wilson Present SoulPancake,” an hour-long special on “love”. From there, SoulPancake pivoted into a video production company.[6]

Video Content[edit]

SoulPancake launched their YouTube channel on July 23, 2012 as an extension to the SoulPancake website and book. According to Wilson, the launch of the channel was where the voice and identity of SoulPancake was cultivated. [7] The YouTube channel became a home for SoulPancake digital original content, including well-known series and viral hits such the Kid President series [8], My Last Days [9], The Science of… [10], and Tell My Story [11].

SoulPancake began releasing video on its Facebook page in 2014, posting content such as The Blend [12] and That Moment Social Media Saved My Life [13]. Both have each received over 30 million views to date.

The SoulPancake Agency[edit]

SoulPancake developed an in-house creative agency focused on creating branded content and advertising campaign for consumer brands. Since 2013, SoulPancake has worked with brands including Coca-Cola[14], Sprint [15], and most notably Purina [16] with the video "Kitten Therapy," a street stunt sponsored by Purina Tidy Cats. [17]

In 2015, SoulPancake was listed on the Inc. 500 Fastest-Growing Private Companies in America List[18] and was named one “Five Companies Poised to Become the Next Big Thing In 2017”. [19]

Television[edit]

In 2012, SoulPancake expanded its programming into traditional long-form content with the launch of SoulPancake Television Productions. The in-house development company kicked-off with “Life Continued: Defeating Depression,” a one-hour documentary special for MTV [20] and has since followed up with television series and specials for VH1, The Hub Network, Pivot, Pop TV, and The CW. SoulPancake series include "My Last Days" [21], “Kid President’s Declaration of Awesome,” “Mixtape by SoulPancake” and "Impress Me" the scripted series starring Ross Marquand and Jim Meskimen.

In 2016, the TV department expanded to include all long-form and OTT content which included series’ like “Love & Longitude” for Facebook Watch[22] and premiered at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival [23], as well as “Kat,” starring Kesha, and “The S Word with Vanessa Lengies” for Amazon Prime. [24]

Mission[edit]

The SoulPancake mission to “Make Stuff That Matters,”[25] is the driving force for both the content and business model. With content that strives first to entertain and then to impact, SoulPancake has been able to create a profitable, revenue-generating for-profit, mission-based company. [26]

SoulPancake’s social cause-related integrations and campaigns have included medical research[27], homelessness awareness and activism [28], and animal rights [29]. The company has raised more than $2 million for charities supporting cancer research and has worked to provide more than 3 million meals to the ConAgra Food Foundation. [30]
