Source files
A source file is a file containing the original, editable data of a digital resource from which a final distributed format is derived. The concept applies across digital domains: in scientific publishing (LaTeX/Markdown → PDF), graphic design (PSD/AI → PNG), open hardware (CAD files → manufacturing files), and software (source code → executable).[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]
The UNESCO 2019 Recommendation on Open Educational Resources recommends that Member States develop mechanisms to incentivize stakeholders to publish source files using open file formats in public repositories. [14]
