The South Beach Hotel is located in Miami Beach, Florida, adjacent to Collins Park. The hotel was previously named the Liberty Arms Hotel. In 2013, it was acquired by Think Hospitality, and after a year-long full renovation, it was brought back to its Art Deco glory days. It reopened as The South Beach Hotel in 2015. The building’s image is traded on historical postcards [1] by Art Deco collectors.
History
Designed by architect Henry Hohauser, South Beach Hotel was built in 1939 by Pollock Construction Company. Previously, it was known as the Liberty Arms Hotel. The design was art deco style, featuring an asymmetrical “U” shape, together with a distinctive roof line and architectural elements that would make it very distinctive in its day. In fact, the building was – and is – one of the leading architectural gems to be found on 21st Street in Collins Park. Such was its architectural importance that it was given a National Historic Designation as part of the Miami Beach Architectural District in 1979. An additional Local Historic Designation was awarded in 1985 [2] The primary entryway is located on the front facade facing north onto 21st Street with a view of Collins Park and the Bass Museum of Art.
