South Philadelphia Athenaeum
The South Philadelphia Athenaeum was a not-for-profit venues in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It operated from circa spring 2004 to September 24, 2005. It was an open forum for free public events ranging from weekly philosophy and mathematics lectures, to fashion, art, game, puppet, magic, comedy and musical shows.[citation needed]
Overview[edit]
The roughly 13,000 sq ft (1,200 m2) space housed a recording studio, two practice rooms, a silk-screen printing area, and a performance space. Donations were requested to support touring acts.[citation needed]
It was closed by the Philadelphia Department of Licensing and Inspections and the South Philadelphia Police on the same day that it was mentioned in National Geographic Traveler magazine as "a group of 30 twentysomethings working and playing in a 13,000-square-foot warehouse".[1]
