The Southern Asian river dolphins (Platanista gangetica) and (Platanista indicus) are a group of freshwater or river dolphins three of which are found in Republic of India, Bangladesh, Nepal and one in Pakistan respectively.
They are split into two seperate subspecies, the Ganges river dolphin (P. g. gangetica) and the Indus river dolphin (P. i. minor).
From the 1970s until 1998, they were regarded as same species; however, in 1998, their classification was changed from two separate species to subspecies of a single species. The idea was to wait until genetic analysis had decided how best to classify them.
