Southern California Seminary (SCS) is a conservative non-denominational private institution of higher education affiliated with Shadow Mountain Community Church under the leadership of David Jeremiah, in El Cajon, California. Southern California Seminary is approved to offer a range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees through its accrediting body, the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS)[1], as well as the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE)[2], and is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education[3]

History[edit]

Southern California Seminary has been training pastors and Christian leaders in San Diego for over 70 years under several different names. In that time, two men have served as president: Dr. Otto Reese and Dr. Gary Coombs.

Three institutions merged to form what is known today as Southern California Seminary: Linda Vista Baptist Bible College and Seminary (LVBBC&S), Southern California Bible College (SCBC), and San Diego Bible College and Seminary (SDBC&S).[4]

Institutional Distinctives[edit]

Southern California Seminary holds to the conservative evangelical position articulated in the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy concerning the inspiration of Scripture and employs a literal historical-grammatical method of interpretation to the biblical text. As such, SCS affirms a literal six-day creation week and maintains both premillennialism and dispensationalism in its statement of faith.[5] SCS is noted for its multi-cultural and multi-lingual student body.[6] In 2015 SCS was ranked #29 among the most diverse colleges in America.[7]

Academic Programs[edit]

The academic programs of SCS include undergraduate and graduate studies. The College at SCS offers the Associate of Arts and the Bachelor of Arts in biblical studies. The Graduate School of Bible and Theology offers several Master of Arts degrees as well as the Master of Divinity, Master of Theology, and the Doctor of Ministry. The Graduate School of Behavioral Sciences offers the Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy and Counseling Psychology, as well as the Doctor of Psychology.[8]
