Southern Pacific 2248, also known as The Tarantula Engine, is a 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler type steam locomotive built by the A.L Cooke Locomotive Works in 1896 for the Southern Pacific Railroad for mixed traffic duties. 2248 was leased to the Pacific Fruit Express Company in 1945 and was retired from service in 1959. When Walt Disney was looking for 2248, he wanted that engine to run around in the amusement park. In 1974 it was sold to the Texas State Railroad between Palestine and Rusk where it was restored to operating condition. In 1981 the engine was withdrawn from service. The locomotive was retired in 1981 and in 1986 the engine was taken for restoration into operating condition. The locomotive returned to service on November 16, 1991. The locomotive was withdrawn from service in 1999 and in 2001 the locomotive was back in service, and the locomotive was withdrawn on March 2015. Now the locomotive is in storage being restored into operating condition as of 2023.
