The Southwest Florida Library Network (SWFLN) is one of five regional library consortiums in the state of Florida, serving the southern Gulf Coast region. Member libraries come from Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Hendry, Lee, and Monroe counties as well as the Seminole Tribe of Florida's tribal library program.[1]

Programs and Services[edit]

The consortium offers professional development and lending services for its member libraries, as well as networking opportunities and advocacy work. SWFLN's first bylaws were adopted in 1992, and it is a nonprofit governed by a board of directors.[2]

Some of its most important lending services include facilitating the popular DLLI interlibary loan service for the region, as well as providing access to the OverDrive ebook borrowing platform.

Library Initiatives[edit]

SWFLN has a particular focus on integrating science, technology, education, art, and mathematics (STEAM) in library programming. This includes hosting webinars and training sessions on STEAM related topics, such as integrating makerspaces into the library or hosting low-cost STEAM projects,[3] as well as lending technology like 3D printers, drones, virtual reality equipment, and maker kits. [4] Other initiatives include offering leadership training and management classes for members, [5] as well as hurricane preparedness seminars.[6]

SWFLN has also coordinated digital library projects in partnership with other Florida libraries and cultural institutions. The Gold Coast Collections digitization project is one such project that provides free, online access to photographs and other documents related to Southwest Florida history. These collections include historic photos from the Koreshan State Historic Site and Big Cypress National Preserve.[7]
