Space Ace Assassin: Capital Galaxy is an arcade-style shooter video game. It was created by Timothy Courtney who also created Lucas the Game, PhpNews, Open Bundle, Game Talk, and has published Photography. In Space Ace Assassin, the player controls a spaceship which navigates through dozens of levels consisting of tunnels. Each tunnel is full of patrolling enemy guards and coins. The player's goal is to destroy all enemy forces, without dying, and to pass completely through each tunnel and into the next.
Plot
In Space Ace Assassin, an all-powerful intergalactic government has defeated all competing governments and armies in what is considered to be the final war. However, during the final war, Earth and other inhabitable planets were destroyed. The all-powerful remaining government and its society now exist in a fantasy space world where artificial structures have been built. Within these structures are heavily guarded tunnels, which the player can navigate through in a quest to destroy the enemy.[1]
Gameplay
The style of gameplay is similar to an arcade shooter, in which the player must navigate a space ship through vertical tunnels.[2] The tunnels are heavily guarded by robotic goblins. If an enemy bumps into the player, the player dies and must start the level over again. There are 23 very difficult tunnels to cross through. The player starts the level by flying out of an entrance portal and must navigate to the end of the level where the player must fly their spaceship into the exit portal. Along the tunnel path are many enemies and coins which the player has the opportunity to score points with. High scores are calculated between levels, and the player is awarded an achievement based on performance. When a robotic goblin guard is shot by the player's spaceship, that enemy explodes into pieces.[3]
Development
Space Ace Assassin: Capital Galaxy was developed by artist and game designer Timothy Courtney.[4] Courtney is known for not revealing much about his projects, until they are completed or almost completed and being published.[5] Hence, there are few details known about the development of Space Ace Assassin.[6] A demo was released with 1-2 levels months prior to game release. The game engine is likely to be Unity, based on previous development announcements, where screenshots were published. This game was published on July 06, 2016, approximately one year after Courtney's previous video game release of Lucas the Game. It was released for PC, Mac, and Linux in a DRM-free state. It is still available on various game websites like Itch Games and TimothyCourtneyMedia.com.[7]
Artwork
All of the artwork was created using the open-source image editing software GIMP. Timothy Courtney has stated on several occasions[8] including during the release of Lucas the Game one year prior[9], that he has mastered GIMP and only uses it for creating video game art.[10][11] Lucas the Game by Timothy Courtney was the first published video game to have all of the art made using GIMP software.[12][13]
