Spaghetti Junction is an intersection in Frankfort, Kentucky, United States.[1] As of 2020, it is a straightforward intersection where four roads meet: East Main Street (US 60), Versailles Road (US 60/US 421), Georgetown Road (US 460), and Wilkinson Blvd (US 421). Locally it is widely known and referred to as Spaghetti Junction, including by the City of Frankfort, the Franklin County government, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the state agency which maintains all four roads leading up to the intersection.[2][3] Elevation is 805 feet above sea level.

At the northeast corner of the intersection is the city's Fire Station #4.[4] To the southwest is Green Hill Cemetery.[5] Established in 1865,[6] this cemetery is the site of the Colored Soldiers Monument, a monument on the National Register of Historic Places that was erected in 1924 to honor black soldiers of central Kentucky who fought for the Union in the American Civil War.[7]

History[edit]

The Green Mill restaurant and service station, built to resemble a windmill with a green roof,[8] used to sit in the middle of the intersection with the roads going around it. A 1953 map[9] as well as several photographs taken at the time[10][8] depict how the roads went all around the Green Mill. By 1959 Green Mill was gone and a third road had been added to the mix.[9] As of 2019, the intersection retains the name "Spaghetti Junction".[11]
