Sparks Marina
The Sparks Marina is a park in Sparks, Nevada, United States centered around the 100 feet (30 m) deep Helm's Lake [1]. It features a pedestrian walk, swimming and other aquatic activities, and nearby retail outlets. Several species of fish are also stocked in the lake[2].
History
Helm's Lake was originally a gravel quarry, named Helm's Pit and run by Helm's Construction Company. In 1987, a contamination of petroleum products was discovered, linked to a leak at a nearby tank farm owned by Santa Fe Pacific Pipeline, and the site was declared a Superfund Site several years later [2][3]. In 1996 the site was declared free of chemicals, and the city of Sparks acquired the land. The city intended to develop the site into a park, with the pit as a pond. In 1997 the nearby Truckee River flooded, spilling water into Helm's Pit and filling it in two days [4].
