Speak Now (Taylor's Version) is the upcoming third re-recorded album by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, scheduled for release on DATE, through Republic Records. It is a re-recording of Swift's third studio album, Speak Now (2010), following her re-recordings of Fearless and Red in 2021. The re-recording venture is Swift's countermeasure against the changed ownership of the masters to her first six studio albums. The re-recorded album will include all 19 tracks from the original deluxe edition, plus X songs "From The Vault", which are unreleased songs Swift wrote for the 2010 album.

Background[edit]

Taylor Swift released her third studio album, Speak Now in 2010 to critical and commercial success. It was distributed by American record label Big Machine. Fearless is a country pop effort. The success of Fearless made Swift one of country music's biggest stars to crossover into the mainstream market. At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where Swift won Best Female Video for "You Belong with Me", rapper-producer Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech, resulting in widespread media discussion and internet memes. At the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, Swift sang "You Belong with Me" and "Rhiannon" with Stevie Nicks; some media criticized Swift's performance for her weak live vocals. MTV News commented the MTV Awards incident transformed Swift into a "bona-fide mainstream celebrity", and The New York Times said seeing see a talented singer-songwriter like Swift "make the occasional flub" at the Grammy Awards performance was "refreshing". Swift began writing for her third studio album immediately after she released Fearless and continued during her Fearless Tour in 2009–2010.

As per her contract with Big Machine, Swift released six studio albums under the label from 2006 to 2017. In late 2018, the contract with the label expired; she hence withdrew from Big Machine and signed a new recording deal with Republic Records, a division of Universal Music Group, which secured her the rights to own the masters of the new music she will release. In 2019, American businessman Scooter Braun and his company Ithaca Holdings acquired Big Machine. As part of the acquisition, ownership of the masters to Swift's first six studio albums, including Red, transferred to Braun. In August 2019, Swift denounced Braun's purchase of the label, and announced that she would re-record her first six studio albums, so as to own their masters herself. In November 2020, Braun sold the masters to Shamrock Holdings, an American private equity firm owned by the Disney estate, under the conditions that Braun and Ithaca Holdings will continue to financially profit from the albums. Swift began re-recording the albums in November 2020.
