Third Eye Foundation (Nepal)

Overview

The Third Eye Foundation is a volunteer organization located in Nepal dedicated to improving education, healthcare, veterinary services, women’s rights and community development in underprivileged areas.[1] The program partners with local target groups in major cities and rural areas to empower marginalized communities, coordinate with stakeholders to properly secure and distribute resources, and uplift the economic level of people and localities by disseminating relevant skills, technology and knowledge.

History

The organization was founded in 2010 by Bijaya Ghimire. Ghimire grew up in Lamjung, a rural and privileged area of central Nepal. Despite a well-off upbringing, Ghimire developed a strong curiosity to experience life in underprivileged areas of Nepal. His curiosity motivated him to become a volunteer science teacher in the remote village of Thulibesi upon finishing high school in 2004. During his time in Thulibesi, Ghimire witnessed how his volunteer service improved local education outcomes and inspired an entire community.  Once Thulibesi had an education system that was capable of continuing to improve on its own, Ghimire attended Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu where he received his Bachelors of Arts in English Literature and Philosophy in 2008.

In 2009, while serving as a guide for a trekking company in tourism throughout the Himalayas, Ghimire witnessed an extreme amount of suffering from severe financial poverty, poor sanitation, and lack of adequate education. He decided again to utilize volunteer service as a means to improve the socio-economic strength of Nepal’s poorer regions. Ghimire founded the Third Eye Foundation in 2010. He used a significant amount of his savings from his trekking job to do so. He also decided to further his education, completing his Masters of English Literature and Philosophy two years later. Upon graduating, Ghimire dedicated himself fully to the Third Eye Foundation. Since 2010, the organization has regularly welcomed volunteers from across the world and is one of the largest, and most impactful volunteer organizations in Nepal.

Programs

Animal Care and Wildlife

Volunteers in the Animal Care and Wildlife Program support the protection and well-being of animals while promoting responsible conservation practices. Through the Third Eye Foundation, volunteers work with local shelters, rescue centers, and conservation teams that focus on animal welfare and wildlife protection. This program addresses key issues such as stray animal care, habitat preservation, and awareness about ethical treatment of animals in both urban and rural areas.

Volunteers take part in daily care activities such as feeding, cleaning shelters, assisting in basic treatment support, and observing animal behavior. In wildlife-focused projects, they support conservation education, habitat monitoring, and community awareness programs that help protect endangered species. These activities contribute to long-term sustainability by reducing human-animal conflict and encouraging local participation in conservation efforts. Volunteers gain practical experience while working in real environments where your contribution has visible impact.

Child Care and Youth Development

Child Care and Youth Development volunteering in Nepal focuses on supporting children’s growth, education, and emotional well-being in safe and nurturing environments. Volunteers work with childcare centers, schools, and community programs that support children from diverse and often underprivileged backgrounds. This program aims to create positive learning spaces where children gain confidence, develop life skills, and access opportunities for a better future.

Volunteers assist with daily childcare activities, informal education, and youth engagement programs. They organize creative sessions, basic learning support, sports, and personal development activities that encourage teamwork and communication. The focus stays on building trust and consistency in children’s lives while supporting local caregivers and teachers.

Community Development

Volunteers in this program engage directly with community members to support small-scale development projects that create long-term impact. These projects include infrastructure support, sanitation awareness, skill-building programs, and local initiatives that strengthen livelihoods.

Volunteers work closely with local leaders, youth groups, and families to understand real needs on the ground. You may assist in organizing community workshops, supporting women empowerment activities, or helping improve basic facilities such as schools and public spaces. This hands-on involvement builds strong connections with the community and ensures that every effort aligns with local priorities.

Education and Teaching Programs

Third Eye volunteers work alongside local teachers in schools that often face limited resources, large class sizes, and gaps in access to quality education.  This program focuses on improving learning outcomes for children while strengthening confidence, creativity and communication through interactive teaching methods. Volunteers support English language instruction, basic subjects, and extracurricular activities, helping create a more engaging and inclusive learning environment. Volunteers gain insight into Nepal’s education system, local traditions, and community life, making the experience both impactful and personally enriching.

Volunteers in this program can either work in public schools or monasteries.

Women Empowerment

Volunteers in this program work with local women’s groups, cooperatives, and community programs that promote education, vocational training, and social inclusion. This program addresses key challenges such as limited access to opportunities, financial dependency, and social barriers, while creating pathways for long-term growth and self-reliance.

Volunteers assist in skill development activities such as basic education, language support, handicraft training, and small business guidance. You may help organize workshops on financial literacy, health awareness, and leadership development. These activities strengthen women’s ability to participate actively in their communities and improve their livelihoods. By working closely with local participants, they support existing initiatives while encouraging confidence and practical skill-building.

Internships

Healthcare

The health care and medical internship in Nepal is an exceptional opportunity for students and professionals seeking hands-on experience in a diverse and culturally rich medical environment. This program is designed to provide practical exposure to Nepal’s healthcare system, allowing interns to work alongside experienced doctors and medical staff in hospitals, clinics, and community health centers. Interns gain valuable insights into public health challenges, rural healthcare delivery, and traditional healing practices while enhancing their clinical skills and global perspective.

Through this health care and medical internship in Nepal, interns actively engage in patient care, observe medical procedures, assist in health camps, and support local healthcare initiatives. The program integrates key learning areas such as community health, preventive medicine, nursing support, and medical outreach in underserved regions. By participating in this immersive experience, interns not only develop professional competencies but also contribute to improving healthcare access and awareness among local communities. This makes the internship ideal for medical students, nursing students, pre-med graduates, and healthcare enthusiasts looking for meaningful volunteer work abroad.

Veterinary

The Veterinary Internship in Nepal offers practical experience in animal health care while supporting local veterinary services and animal welfare efforts. Interns work with veterinarians, animal shelters, and community-based animal care programs. This internship focuses on improving animal health, supporting treatment services, and promoting awareness about responsible animal care in both urban and rural areas.

Interns assist in daily veterinary activities such as basic health checks, treatment support, vaccination programs, and animal observation. Interns may also take part in outreach programs that educate local communities about animal care, hygiene, and disease prevention. This hands-on experience builds clinical understanding while exposing you to real challenges in veterinary practice within developing regions. All tasks are supervised by professionals to ensure ethical practice and proper learning.
