speed dating is a research method, inspired by the framework of its dating-scene namesake, to help design teams learn how people react to design ideas through comparing multiple design concepts in quick succession.[1] It takes into account existing contextual and social factors. Both generative and evaluative, speed dating helps speed teams from the abstract to the concrete.

Researches rapidly “speed date” design opportunities with target users. [1]The power of speed dating lies in exposing people to future design ideas via storyboards before any expensive prototypes are built. It also mitigates risks of non-acceptance after new products are launched. Speed dating process is often divided into the following steps.
Create storyboards[edit]
Storyboards are designed based on the insights generated from the previous contextual research. The intention of design storyboards is to [1]elicit an emotional, empathic reaction to the characters so that participants can easily identify with them. The scenarios should each focus on a specific need and show a potential design solution to address the need.
Conduct the sessions[edit]
During the speed dating sessions, each storyboard should be presented to a group of participants. Ask the participant if they recognize the need, Not if they want solution. Follow up questions should also be asked to help design team understand whether the specific user needs are met or not.
Reflect and Analysis[edit]
After the interviews, the team should refocus conversations on the needs that were expressed in both the research and the storyboard sessions. Instead of spending time ranking or prioritizing the designs, the team should use the time to validate needs, discuss misunderstandings, refine scenarios, and discover broad opportunity areas.[2]
