Spiekeroog II

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Spiekeroog II is a German passenger ferry operated by Nordseebad Spiekeroog GmbH on the route between Neuharlingersiel on the mainland coast of Lower Saxony and the East Frisian island of Spiekeroog. Built in 1997 by Fassmer Werft in Berne, the vessel is part of the regular ferry fleet serving the island.[1][2]

History

Spiekeroog II was completed in 1997 for Nordseebad Spiekeroog GmbH, the municipal company responsible for ferry transport to the island.[2] The vessel was introduced to complement the existing ferry capacity and to modernise the connection between the mainland and Spiekeroog.

Like other vessels in the fleet, it is designed for operation in the Wadden Sea, where tidal conditions and shallow waters require specialised hull design and manoeuvrability.[2]

The ferry operates from its home port of Spiekeroog, with regular departures from Neuharlingersiel. It forms part of the essential transport infrastructure supplying the car-free island.

Design and characteristics

Spiekeroog II is a medium-sized passenger ferry designed for short-distance coastal service. Public ship databases list the vessel with an IMO number of 9156514.[3]

The ship has a length of around 50 metres and a beam of approximately 11 metres. Its shallow draft allows it to operate safely in tidal waters and harbour approaches typical of the East Frisian coast.[3]

The vessel is powered by diesel engines driving two propellers and is equipped with a bow thruster for improved handling in narrow harbours and during tidal variations. Its passenger capacity is higher than that of older vessels in the fleet, supporting peak tourist demand in summer.[2]

Service

Spiekeroog II operates scheduled passenger services between Neuharlingersiel and Spiekeroog. The route is one of the main access links to the island, which does not permit private car traffic.[2]

The ferry typically operates alongside other vessels of the fleet, including Spiekeroog I and the high-speed passenger catamaran WattnExpress, ensuring year-round connectivity for residents, visitors, and goods transport.[2]
