Spiekeroog IV
Spiekeroog IV is a German freight ferry and former passenger ferry operated by Nordseebad Spiekeroog GmbH between Neuharlingersiel on the mainland coast of Lower Saxony and the East Frisian island of Spiekeroog. Built in 1979 by Husumer Schiffswerft in Husum, the vessel previously sailed under the names Pellworm I and Adler Pomerania before entering service at Spiekeroog.[1][2]
History
According to the operator, Spiekeroog IV was built in 1979 at Husumer Schiffswerft, Husum.[1] Public ship registries identify the vessel as IMO 7824871 and list 1979 as its year of build.[2] Nordseebad Spiekeroog describes the vessel as the former Pellworm I and Adler Pomerania.[1]
The ship is used on the mainland–island link between Neuharlingersiel and Spiekeroog and is part of the transport system that supplies the car-free island with passengers, vehicles and freight.[1][3]

On 22 December 2023, during Storm Zoltan, the vessel broke free from its moorings and was driven onto a flooded parking area at Neuharlingersiel.[4] Nordseebad Spiekeroog reported that salvage work began in February 2024 and that the vessel was successfully returned to the water on 18 April 2024, after which it resumed freight service.[4][5]
From February 2026, the operator redesignated Spiekeroog IV for freight-only operation, stating that it would no longer be used for regular passenger traffic.[3][6]
Design and characteristics
Nordseebad Spiekeroog lists Spiekeroog IV as a Kombifähre (combined ferry) for freight and passenger transport, designed for Wattfahrt service in the shallow tidal waters of the Wadden Sea.[1] The vessel has a gross tonnage of 299, a length of 44.65 metres, a beam of 10.50 metres and a draft of 1.55 metres.[1] VesselFinder gives a length overall of 45.65 metres and also lists the ship at 299 GT.[2]
The ship is powered by two main engines rated at 285 kW each and is fitted with a bow thruster.[1] The operator gives a service speed of 10 knots and a summer passenger capacity of 300.[1]
Service
Spiekeroog IV has long been central to cargo operations between Neuharlingersiel and Spiekeroog.[3] Nordseebad Spiekeroog states that freight traffic to and from the island is handled by the vessel, including vehicles and general cargo, with onward island distribution provided by a local logistics contractor.[3]
Since February 2026, the vessel has operated as a pure freight ship, which the operator says allows more flexible departures, shorter turnaround times and more reliable cargo transport at earlier times of day.[3][6]
