Sporalogy
Definition and Concepts
Sporalogy is a method of predicting an individual's future based on data from the trams in Helsinki, Finland. Observations such as color, number, speed, and route are all possible considerations used in the methods of prediction.
Just as astrology indicates a relation to celestial bodies and space, Sporalogy indicates a relation to trams, as "spor" is a part of the word for tram in Finnish. For this reason, the study can also be known as Tramology. Mustelin argues that the trams have a much more imminent and direct effect on the people of Helsinki rather than the movement of the planets thousands and millions of miles away. Another reason trams were chosen is the integral role they've had in the city's public transportation system.[1]
Invention and Legacy
It was first devised by Finnish professor Nils Mustelin[2] in his 1980s essay "The Strange Worlds of Astrology".[3] It was only ever recorded as a playful theory rather than a fleshed-out concept, and currently exists only in a small handful of paragraphs all the way at the very end of this one essay. Various other blogs and entertainment sites have written about the idea vaguely; however, none of them have provided concrete expansions or additions to the base concept. Currently, not much else has come of the study outside its first introduction in Mustelin's essay several decades ago.
