Sports in Kilgore
Kilgore, Texas, has an active sports community with several venues, programs, local teams, and youth leagues. Kilgore has developed facilities like the Whataburger Sports Complex, a multi-field site supporting baseball, softball, and soccer.
Description
Kilgore College's athletics teams are known as the Rangers and include:
- Football - NJCAA national champions 1966[1]
- Men's Basketball - NJCAA national champions 1956, 1958[2]
- Women's Basketball - NJCAA national champions 1988, 1990, 1993[3]
- Softball
The Rangers compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association's Region XIV, as a member of the Southwest Junior College Football Conference for football, and the Southwest Junior College Conference for all other sports.
The Kilgore Drillers were a minor league baseball team that played from 1947 to 1950 in the East Texas League and the Lone Star League. In 1948 they achieved their best record with 94 wins and 44 losses.[citation needed] The team played their home games at Driller Park, a venue originally built for them, which has since hosted various baseball events, including college and high school matches.
Also the Kilgore Gushers, Kilgore Rangers, and Kilgore Braves were all professional baseball teams that played in Kilgore, Texas.[4]
