Springfontein Wine Estate
Springfontein Wine Estate is an organic Wine Estate, situated outside the village of Stanford, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Under the monopole appellation Springfontein Rim,[1] the Estate is focusing on autochthonous grape varietals from South Africa, Pinotage and Chenel.
History
The first vines were planted shortly after Dr. Johst Weber, a German engineer, acquired the first portion of the old cattle farm in 1996.[2] He envisioned the potential of the very specific limestone soils for growing vines and, together with a group of friends, established Springfontein Wine Estate.[3][4][5]
Springfontein's first wines were bottled in 2004.[6]
In 2018, Springfontein Wine Estate successfully applied to define Springfontein Rim as a production area (ward) to produce Wine of Origin.[7][8]
Since 2019, Springfontein Wine Estate is certified organic through Ecocert in both the vineyard and the cellar.[9]
Other involvements
The Wine Estate has a collaboration with the Rotary Club in Rottweil, Germany. Jointly, a charity wine has been created.[10]
Springfontein is supporting her Head Vigneronne, Jeanne Vito, in establishing the first vineyard in Togo.[11][12]
