Spyros Kintzios
Spyridon (Spyros) Kintzios (Athens, 20 May 1962) is a Greek academic and Rector of the Agricultural University of Athens[1].
After graduating in 1986 from the Higher Agricultural School of Athens (HASA) with distinction (9/10) and completing his military service, he studied at the Department of Chemistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In 1988, he moved to Germany with a scholarship from the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD) as a postgraduate researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Munich. In 1993, he obtained his Ph.D. in Genetics and Plant Breeding from the Technical University of Munich[2].
He has served as Director of the Laboratory of Systematic Botany (2006–2007), Founder and Director of the Laboratory of Cell Technology (2015–present), Chair of the Department of Biotechnology (2013), and Dean of the School of Food, Biotechnology and Development at the Agricultural University of Athens (2013–2017).
Research Work and Distinctions
He has more than 30 years of research and teaching experience in Biotechnology, particularly in Cell Biology, Cell Technology, and Biosensors. He is the author/co-author of more than 160 original research publications in international journals, 20 chapters in international books, and over 80 presentations at international and national conferences. He has edited five international scientific books and authored four others. He is a member of several scientific societies and recipient of multiple awards, including: The “Georgia Christodoulopoulos” Award of the Hellenic Virological Society, The Award of the Hellenic Society of Free Radicals and Oxidative Stress, The Distinguished Service Award in Epidemiological Defense Science, The IDea Incubator Award 2021 for the fastest and most sensitive portable SARS-CoV-2 detection test[3] and the 1st Innovation Competition Award of the Hellenic Ministry of National Defense.
He invented the Bioelectric Recognition Assay (BERA)[4] and the Molecular Identification through Membrane Engineering (MIME)[5] technologies, which have defined the global field of cellular biosensors in food safety[6][7], medical diagnostics[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15], environmental monitoring[16] [17]and defence[18] applications. Furthermore, he has applied advanced biosensor technologies in the field on non-chemical distant cell-to-cell communication[19][20]. He holds four national and three international patents and has coordinated and participated in more than 40 international and national funded research projects.
Participation in Bodies and Organizations
He is a founding member and board member of the Hellenic Biotechnology Cluster (HBio), co-founder of the Cypriot organization EMBIO, co-founder of the spin-offs Key2Core and CeBTec, Vice President of the Hellenic Society for Nanotechnology Applications in Medicine and Health Sciences, member of the Hellenic Agricultural Academy, board member of the Hellenic Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage, board member of the Institute of Greek Dietary Culture and Gastronomy, former President of the Wine Tourism Council, and member of numerous public and sectoral committees in Greece and abroad.
Political Activity
He is a member of the Alexis Tsipras Institute. A strong advocate of the public welfare system combined with innovative private initiative, he has been a key contributor to the public dialogue on issues regarding the future of agriculture and its strategic redesign[21][22][23][24], food resilience and security[25][26][27] and public education policies[28][29]
