St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Church of Kelowna is the third parish established in British Columbia that belongs to the Serbian Orthodox Church-Diocese of Canada, now under the jurisdiction of Bishop Mitrofan (Kodić). Founded in 2011, the church of St. Elijah is located at 585 Gerstmar Road in Kelowna, British Columbia..[1][2][3]

Although commercial agriculture became firmly established in 1890s, Kelowna region was still sparsely populated until after World War II when Eastern Europeans and others began moving westward to settle and find their homestead. It wasn't until the Fall of the Iron Curtain that the parish came to be in the 1990s to serve the many Serbian Orthodox Christians who fled from Croatia, Dalmatia, Slavonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and the Serbian Province of Kosovo in the growing city of Kelowna. In 2011 the Church-School Congregation was officially consecrated. Since then, it has expanded to include a church and a community centre. The spokesperson for the parish is Dan Jovanovich[4].

Other mission parishes such as co-religionist Romanians and other Eastern Orthodox faithful belonging to the Orthodox Church of America (OCA) frequently use the Serbian church on Gerstmar Road for their religious services.

On 30 July a Church Slava is held annually with traditional folk fesitvities at Strathcona Beach Park overlooking Okanagan Lake[5]

The Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Elijah is one of three in British Columbia. The other two are located in Vancouver and Burnaby. All belong to the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Canada. Planned is another missionary parish in Victoria, British Columbia, where there is a significant number of retirees of Serbian, Montenegrin and Macedonian ethnicity.
