The church was built in honor of Saint George at the expense of Colonel Mykhailo Myklashevsky during 1696-1701.

History[edit]

During the Kievan Rus, the Vydubychi Monastery became a prominent cultural center. The first brick church on its territory was St. Michael's Cathedral, built in 1070-1088.

The second stage in the formation of the architectural ensemble of the monastery is connected with the period of the Hetmanate, when Colonel Mykhailo Myklashevsky of Starodub became the patron and patron of the monastery. St. George's Cathedral and the monastery refectory were built at his expense. In the following years, with the support of Hetman Danylo Apostol, a three-tiered bell tower was built.

The solemn laying of the building of St. George's Cathedral took place on June 11, 1696, the construction was completed five years later, on July 15, 1701. In the same year, the cathedral was consecrated by Metropolitan Varlaam Yasinsky.

Iconostasis of St. George's Cathedral

A special pride of the church was the five-tiered gilded iconostasis, donated by the wife of Hetman Danylo Apostol.
