St. George Serbian Orthodox Church is located at 2835 Dawson Road in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and is part of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Canada[1]under the omofor of Bishop Mitrofan (Kodić) with his See at the Holy Transfiguration Serbian Orthodox Monastery.[2][3]

History[edit]

Back in 1970 a group of Serbs living in Thunder Bay expressed a desire to have a church, Bishop Sava (Vuković) answered by making a canonical visit to Northern Ontario on 14 August of the same year. On that occasion, the good bishop announced the formation of the St. George Church-School Congregation and parish in Thunder Bay. The founding Church Board members elected Boško Damjanović as president, Nikola Zuber, vice president, Ostoja Majdanac, secretary, and Jovan Stepanović, treasurer. The members of the first Auditing Board were also elected, including Lazar Vranjković, Đura Kovačević, and Luka Krenović. V. Rev. Božidar Dragićević of Duluth, Minnesota was named first parish administrator, "with the consent of Bishop Firmilijan Ockokoljić".

Five years later, the St. George Church-School Congregation bought four acres of land where a wooden building was constructed to become the center of new church life in the community. The building was blessed by visiting Serbian Orthodox priests from Winnipeg and south of the border, Duluth. The services were temporarily held in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church until the workinside the chapel were completed. Bishop Sava (Vuković) is credited for encouraging the Thunder Bay group and personally visited them in 1972 and again in 1974.[4]

The current parish priest and administrator is V. Rev. Slavisa Lekić.
