St. Joseph's Health Centre (also known as the Sudbury General Hospital), was the principal hospital of Greater Sudbury from its construction in 1950 to its decommissioning in 2011, when the services it provided were moved to Health Sciences North. The building has since been purchased by Panoramic Properties in October 2012, and in 2019, was made the site of Canada's Largest Mural.

History[edit]

The hospital was originally built by The Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie in 1950[1][2] as the Sudbury General Hospital of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, with a capacity of 200 beds.[3] In 1972 the hospital's capacity was expanded from 200 to 360 beds.

Post-Closure[edit]

The site of St. Joseph's Health Centre was sold by the Sisters to Panoramic Properties in 2012 for conversion into 210 residential apartments.[4] However, development on this project has not progressed significantly and the building has been cited as an example of urban decay, becoming marred with graffiti and having several windows broken. Despite being located on a major thoroughfare and routinely monitored by security, the building has become a popular site for urban exploration[5]

In 2019, the artist RISK worked to create the largest mural in Canada at the site [6], covering the whole building in a wash of colours visible from all around Ramsey Lake, as part of the city's Up Here Festival.
