St. Joseph Parish & School is a Roman Catholic church and elementary school in the Diocese of Covington, located at 4011 Alexandria Pike in Cold Spring, Kentucky.
The history of the parish dates back to 1870, when a small church was constructed near St. Joseph Orphanage and dedicated by Bishop A.M. Toebbe. This building was operational for at least 12 years, until construction began on a new brick church in 1882. For this structure, clay was excavated from behind the orphanage cemetery and kilns were set up to fire bricks on site. A two-story school was constructed on the property in 1892. It would remain operational for 37 years.[1]
In 1928, Rev. Joseph Broerman selected a new plot of land, approximately one-quarter mile south, that would become the current parish and school complex. A one-story four-room brick building was constructed and still stands today. Over the next several decades multiple expansions occurred, adding additional class rooms, an auditorium/gymnasium, living quarters for the Sisters of Notre Dame, and a chapel.[1]
With a growing number of parishioners, the Diocese gave approval for a new church to be built in 1957. It was constructed over the next several years, and held its first mass on December 21, 1960.[1]
The school expanded in 1987, and again in 1991, with the addition of a new parish hall. In 1995, it was named the largest Catholic church in Campbell County and the largest Catholic school in the Diocese of Covington.[1]
