St. Nicholas Meteorological Station (also known as St. Nicholas Station) is a meteorological facility situated in St. Nicholas, Vale of Glamorgan. The weather station is comprised of instruments and equipment for measuring atmospheric conditions to provide information for weather forecasts and to study the weather and climate. The measurements taken include temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and precipitation amounts.[1]

Equipment

The St. Nicholas Meteorological Station is fully automated and provides regular data to several organisations, which in turn use the data to provide insight into climate change and develop further understanding into microclimates. Organisations using the data from the site include the Met Office[1], NOAA[2] and Weather Underground[3]. Manned observations are made during periods of extreme weather and to measure snow depth.

Weather instruments installed at St. Nicholas Meteorological Station[1]

  • Thermometer for measuring air and sea surface temperature
  • Barometer for measuring atmospheric pressure
  • Hygrometer for measuring humidity
  • Anemometer for measuring wind speed
  • Rain gauge for measuring liquid precipitation over a set period of time.
  • Wind vane, also called a weather vane: it shows which way the wind is blowing.
