St Mary and St John Church is an Anglican church in Nugegoda in Sri Lanka..[1][2] Which was first built in 1850, the current church was completed in 1942. It is located in the Centre of Nugegoda, and is a historic landmark in that area.[3][not in citation given][4][5] [6][7]
History[edit]
Construction[edit]
The Missionary Records of 1830 mentions visits to Nugegoda, and there are records of a proposal to build a Church or Chapel on a land, dimensions being 50 yards x 40 yards, which was subsequently given on the 26 May 1849 by Peiris family (Hendrick, Juwanis, Andiris, Gabriel, Marco and Bastiana), to the Missionary of Kotte, this land now includes the building, schoolroom and chapel. Quote “Given to the Church Missionary society for the purpose of holding divine service and also for the building of a Church.” The initial Church was then constructed in May 1850.[8][9][4][10][5] [6][7]
Rev. Isaah Wood obtained funds from the CMS to build the Church, and in a year £18 was granted to complete the verandahs. Later on 10 November 1885, 5 perches of land and 2 roods were purchased for a sum of Rs 21 to collectively form part of the Church cemetery, and by 1929 the Church had a total area of over one acre.[11][9][4][10][5] [6][7]
The Ceylon Diocesan Gazette refers to the Nugegoda, Bewila (Udahamulla) and Nawala chapels being licensed for marriages in 1879. It was also mentioned that the Bishop Edward Ralph Johnson, metropolitan of India & Ceylon, visited Nugegoda on his return from Kotte in 1881.[9][4][10][5] [6][7]
The first Priest was Rev. James Andries De Livera (1864). He died a year later in December 1868 and is buried in the church cemetery, his son Baron De Livera donated the land on which the Parsonage was built (currently the premises of the present Sarasavi Bookshop).[9][4][10][5] [6][7]
Developments[edit]
Later on in 1939 and 1940 the Church was completed, as the current structure that stands today, and was named as S.S. Mary and John, Nugegoda. In 1940, the cemetery was transferred from the Church Missionary Trust Association Ltd to the Diocese of Colombo.[9][4][10][5] [6][7]
Renovations[edit]
In 2016, under the tenure of Rev Dushantha Rodrigo, the Church was completely renovated. This also included the Clergy Houses. The Upstairs offices were newly built, a new belfry was done and an adult baptismal font, which was donated[12]
St. Johns School[edit]
On 5 May 1915, St.John's Mixed English School was founded with 14 pupils. The Schoolroom was also donated by Mr Baron De Livera, behind the Parsonage.[9][4][10][5] [6][7]
In 1931, Christopherson Hall of the St John's Mixed School was built. In 1934, the Mixed School was separated to establish the St John's Girl's School and St John's Boys' School separately. The St John's Boys College with 256 students moved to its present premises on High Level Road, and The Sinhala School that exists next to the Church was rebuilt. Today the boys school is known as St. John's College, Nugegoda.[13][not in citation given][9][4][10][5] [6][7]
