The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC; Arabic: معهد المواصفات والمقاييس للدول الإسلامية; French: l’Institut de Normalisation et de Métrologie pour les Pays Islamiques) is a treaty based intergovernmental organization headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey, and the institute is affiliated to Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).[4][5]
It is the sole standardization body of the OIC and its study scope covers all aspects of standardization, metrology, accreditation and conformity assessment (testing, quality management, certification) that have a bearing on conformity assessment. Meanwhile, SMIIC is neither a conformity assessment body nor a certification body.
All OIC Member States through their National Standardization, Metrology and Accreditation Bodies can be a SMIIC member. SMIIC has 42 Member States to date. (39 Full and 3 Observer Members as of November 2019[6]). Indonesia[7], Kuwait [8] and Russia (Observer) are the latest countries which have joined SMIIC and their membership is effective by 2020.
Preparation of standards especially for the OIC Member States, is the main task of SMIIC. The institute also aims to serve as a common platform for all Member States’ relevant bodies in standardization, metrology and accreditation.
SMIIC is recognized as the technically competent and authorized platform for the legal issues and mandated by the OIC to work in the area of standardization and all other related issues. SMIIC’s technical works are open to the contribution of all relevant stakeholders in all over the world. In the development and revision of all Halal related standards, the main partner of the institute is the International Islamic Fiqh Academy (IIFA), based in Jeddah.
As of 2020, there are 18 technical committees established under SMIIC working on various standard projects according to the needs of the OIC region including halal.
