Stannington Brass Band is a British brass band located in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. It was formed in the 19th century by the community surrounding the town of Stannington and the Knowle Top Chapel as a leisure activity.[1][2] The band is well known for it's concerts and collaborations around Sheffield, performing with local artists such as John Reilly and Lewis Nitikman, The Sheffield Community Gospel Choir and The Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus. The Band is also a successful contesting band, quickly gaining rank in both the Sheffield area and on the national stage. The Band is Currently Placed 124th in the world according to the 4barsrest band rankings, up from 175 in 2019.[3]
History[edit]
Whilst the exact date of Stannington Brass Band's formation is not known, the first mention of Stannington Brass Band was in 1881.[1] The band changed its name early in the 20th century, becoming the Stannington Church Brass Band, before taking a 6 year hiatus in 1963. The Band was reformed in 1968, rebranding itself as Stannington Brass Band, for which the first performance took place at the King Edward VII Orthopaedic Hospital in Sheffield.[2] Since then, the band has played all over the country, in both entertainment and competing capacities. In 1997 the band formed its own training band, with the goal that "No-one, through personal financial circumstances, is denied the opportunity to fully participate" in the band. Notable band achievements include success in 2016, when the band (conducted by former Grimethorpe cornet Derek Renshaw) won the 2nd Section of the National Championship of Great Britain, as well as their more recent promotion to the Championship section, following the bands 2022 Yorkshire First Section Area Championship win under new Musical Director Sam Fisher.[4] This will be the band's second spell in the top flight of British Competitive Banding since its reformation and the first since the band's 50th anniversary in 2019.[5][6]
Community and Funding[edit]
The band has no major sponsors and receives no direct financial support. All funds are raised by the Band's own efforts This includes player subscriptions, grants, performances, donations, prizes, and a patronage scheme. Stannington Brass regularly collaborates with local musicians John Reilly (best known for his bands Boy on a Dolphin and Acoustic Angels) and Canadian pianist and songwriter, Lewis Nitikman, to perform concerts at Sheffield City Hall and Sheffield Cathedral for local cancer charities and the Motor Neurone Disease Association. The band has also been involved in three professional stage productions of "Brassed Off!" at Sheffield's Crucible and Lyceum Theatres, as well as the high profile "A Symphony for Yorkshire" commissioned by the BBC.[7]
