History[edit]

The gallery was established in 2005 by CCTV art journalists Fang Fang and Wu Jin.

2003 - The Fang Fang and Wu Jin began buying art from young, local artists. Their purchases were extensive and speculative, trusting their own knowledge and appreciation of contemporary art in an emerging and unknown art market.[7]

2005 - The decision was made to open a commercial gallery as the stock of paintings had become extensive and representative of the young artists practising in Beijing. The original gallery space was located in 798 Art Zone in Beijing's north-east.

2006 - The directors who both came from media experience used their skills to produce an art magazine. In September  2006 the first edition of Hi Art magazine was published.[8]

2011 -  The directors chose to pursue their individual interests. Star Gallery remaining the sole responsibility of Fang Fang and Wu JIn controlled Hi Art magazine independently

2013  - Due to rapid expansion, Star Gallery moved to a large converted warehouse in the Qikeshu district where it is currently located.[9]

Significant Exhibitions[edit]

2012 saw a courageous project where the company Durex, famous for condom production, sponsored an exhibition curated by Star Gallery in Beijing. The exhibition entitled “After Deliverance", involved 30 young and emerging artists and graphically represented the social liberation of post-cultural China and the developing sexual revolution through the eyes of this generation of young adults.[10]

Throughout Star Gallery's existence the director has always considered the need to consider the young emerging artists. This exhibition echoed earlier events as Star Gallery's first exhibition "Next Station, Cartoon?" (01.04.2005), was also a group show of young artists. These works heralded the swing to the comic strip genre which has dominated art scenes across Western and Eastern art scenes the last 21st century decade.[11]

Unlike the conventional commercial gallery, Star Gallery continued to support young artists before the established and more secure older groups. In 2006 and 2008 Star Gallery rallied 30 artists for two more group exhibitions, allowing the young artists to introduce new and unexpected imagery as well as novel and experimental media. The 2008 exhibition, while curated by Star Gallery was displayed in the Minsheng Modern Art Museum in Shanghai during the Shanghai Biennale.[12]

Art Fairs[edit]

Star Gallery has been exhibiting at Art Fairs both locally and internationally from 2006. In keeping with it’s mission the gallery has been working at these fairs to create an avenue of promotion for many young artists. Star gallery began with Art Beijing and exhibited a group of seven artists including Chen Ke, Ouyang Chun and Gao Yu.

Since Star Gallery’s initial entry to Art Beijing the gallery has participated in Art Basel almost every year since it began running in HongKong.[13] The gallery also participated in the original Hong Kong art fair - Art Hong Kong since 2008.[14]

In all these historical events the Star Gallery continued to promote the young and unknown artists in which it had faith. Many of these are now established artists in China and overseas. Some of the many artists represented by the gallery at Art Basel include Qiu Jiongjiong, Wei Jia and Yan Cong.
