State Fair Records

State Fair Records in an independent American record label specializing in country, folk and blues artists. State Fair Records is based in the design district of Dallas, Texas. The label was formed in February 2013 by Trey Johnson, Paul Williams and Scott Davis. Among the artists signed to the label are Vandoliers, Chris Holt, Pedigo’s Magic Pilsner, Colby Belshe, Pueblo, Chris J Norwood and Bree and the Fellas.

History

Paul Williams entered the music scene in the 1990s as an aspiring guitar player. He’s played in numerous bands, including Tablet and Vibrolux. Since transitioning to producing, Williams has worked with the late Nick Griffiths and produced albums by Polyphonic Spree, Home by Hovercraft, Air Review, and Carter Albrecht's band Sparrows..[1].

Trey Johnson was a member of the band Sorta until 2007. Sorta dissolved following the tragic death of founding member Carter Albrecht. Johnson has recorded three albums as a solo artist since 2007, including Mount Pelee, Where The East Ends, and The Family Piano. While producing, Johnson also focused on teaching at the local music school Zounds Sounds and took an interest in artist development[2]

Scott Davis has a background in aviation and is the current Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Dallas Avionics. Davis is also a pilot and philanthropist who plays numerous musical instruments.[3] Since 1999, he’s been an active member of Hella Shrine Temple and raised money for Scottish Rite Hospital. Scott Davis has played hundreds of shows at The State Fair of Texas as a member of the Shriner’s band.

When the trio formed the label in 2014, it operated out of the Southside building in the Cedars District, south of Downtown Dallas[4]. The label now operates out of the same studio where Willie Nelson recorded Red Headed Stranger and Vandoliers recorded their sophomore album The Native here.[5]

The first record recorded in State Fair Record’s studio was Corbett Guest. The first record produced by State Fair Records was Madison King’s Onward & Upward[6]
