A statue of Charlie Chaplin is installed in Shanghai's New Town Central Park in China.[1][2]
During his lifetime, Chaplin and his work were popular in China, and he had visited Shanghai in 1936. Chinese actress Hu Die hosted a banquet for Chaplin at Shanghai's International Hotel. Mei Lanfang of the Peking opera was one of the attendees.[3] At the 1954 Geneva Conference, Chaplin met with Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai. At the time, Chaplin's films were not allowed to be shown in China.[4]
