Stauffer Center for Strings
The Stauffer Center for Strings is an international, fully integrated music centre for the higher education of string instruments, training students in composition, production, research, innovation and management.[1]
The centre was founded in 2021 in Cremona, in the headquarters of Palazzo Stauffer (formerly Palazzo Stradiotti), a historic, 17th-century building converted into a multifunctional campus.[2] The Palazzo underwent major restoration to become high-tech and sustainable.[3] Today the building houses the Stauffer Academy and the Stauffer Labs, including a recital room, study rooms, a recording studio, a multimedia library, a cafeteria, a guesthouse and a garden.[4]
The Stauffer Center for Strings is a space for artists, teachers and students to come together for educational and performance purposes.[5] The centre draws on the same principles as the Stauffer Academy, an educational project founded by violinist Salvatore Accardo in 1985 to support future generations of musicians.[6][7]
The center offers various programmes, such as the concertmaster artist diploma, a training course which sees violinists from 10 orchestras give advice to students on how to lead an orchestra.[8] There is also an Artist Diploma programme for string soloists and string quartets.[9] Elsewhere, there are workshops on career development, self-promotion and management.[10]
The Center also provides full scholarships to its students, ensuring that all international musicians can access the school.[11]
Teachers[edit]
The Center has over 40 teachers, including violinists Michael Barenboim, Lisa Batiashvili, Elisa Citterio, Daniel Hope, Aleksey Igudesman, Roby Lakatos, Viktoria Mullova, Julian Rachlin; violists Sarah McElravy, Antoine Tamestit, Lawrence Power; cellists Matthew Barley, Sol Gabetta, Steven Isserlis, Mischa Maisky, Abel Selaocoe, Alisa Weilerstein; double bassists Uxía Martínez Botana, Ödön Rácz, and The Maisky Trio. [12]
The Masters of the Stauffer Academy also teach at the Center: violinist Salvatore Accardo, violist Bruno Giuranna, cellist Antonio Meneses, double bassist Franco Petracchi, and the Quartetto di Cremona.[13]
Paolo Petrocelli is Director General of the Center.[14]
