Blurb
Dr. Brewer is doing a little plant-testing in his basement. Nothing to worry about. Harmless, really. But Margaret and Casey Brewer are worried about their father. Especially when they...meet...some of the plants he is growing down there. Then they notice that their father is developing plantlike tendencies. In fact, he is becoming distinctly weedy—and seedy. Is it just part of their father's "harmless" experiment? Or has the basement turned into another little shop of horrors?
Plot
Margaret and Casey Brewer's father, Dr. Brewer, was recently fired from his job. Margaret tells Casey she overheard that her father was fired because some of his experiments went wrong. They notice that their father is becoming more reclusive and spends most of his time in his lab in the basement, hyper-fixated on his work. When Margaret and Casey attempt to enter the basement, their father yells at them to keep out. They notice that their father is clutching his hand, which is bleeding.
Later, Mrs. Brewer has to leave for a family emergency in Tucson, and Dr. Brewer drives her to the airport. While they are away, Margaret and Casey, along with their friend Diane, venture into the basement. Because of the humidity, Casey removes his shirt and drops it on the floor. The kids notice that the plants seem to be breathing, and seem uncanny. They leave the basement at about the same time Dr. Brewer gets home. Casey remembers his shirt and goes in after it. Casey gets tied up by some of the plants in the basement. Margaret comes downstairs and frees him, but they are both caught by their father on the way back up the stairs. Dr. Brewer reiterates that they are not allowed in the basement, and he places a lock on the door.
Later, Margaret gets off the phone with her mother, who must stay in Tucson for a few more days.
