Steam Engine is a Steam-based gaming console platform development project, undertaking development of the operating system for Steam gaming console, and component software constituting the operating system. The project and software are not related to Valve, the owner of the Steam and they are fan-made software created by Steam users.
History
In late 2020, Steam's gaming console, Steam Machine and its operating system, SteamOS due to its failure continued to be neglected. As a result, one user who felt that value was wasted on the Steam gaming console platform set out to create an unofficial sequel to SteamOS.
In early 2021, the development of Big Picture UI, a user interface for Steam Engine, was started.
Project
Operating System
The operating system is composed of a minimum package for implementing Steam and gaming environments based on the Linux kernel. The operating system can basically run on a general PC. This is not only considering the ease of development, but also considering the compatibility of games registered on Steam. However, in order to preserve the uniqueness of Steam Machine and Steam Engine, the products of the project, including the operating system, have no plans to be released to users except for open source products.
User Interface
The Big Picture UI developed to replace the Big Picture Mode of Steam.
- It displays the startup screen in order to conceal the preparation of the operating system, and the Steam immediately after booting.
- It provides a user interface to replace the lack of intuitiveness and accessibility of existing Big Picture Mode of the Steam.
- It contains a window manager, desktop manager and desktop environment for Steam Engine to maintain consistency between a number of games.
Visibility
In accordance with the GPL license of the kernel of the Steam Engine, Linux, the source code of Linux is completely published in the repository. However, Steam Engine's individually developed software and build scripts are not obligated to follow licenses, and it is not published publicly.
