Stefan Lukacs (1908) an American Violin maker, born in Klokocov, Czechoslovakia and immigrated to Perth Amboy, New Jersey in 1948. He worked in his profession over 70 years. His love of violins started early in life at age 11, he built his first violin out of pussy-willow wood which was a crude instrument. At age 17 he apprenticed for three years with a cabinetmaker and worked in his trade. While working as a cabinet maker in Czechoslovakia and the USA, he developed his violins in his home workshop, approximately 30 over his lifetime. He used Maplewood and redwood for his handmade violins. He also made two violins from the wood of an old Steinway piano. These two violins have a unique appearance with their dark ebony rich color and exceptional sound. In addition to building violins, he carved bows and designed and developed a tool that he used to hair the bows. He became popular with the local school system and musicians for his repairs of instruments. He also played the violin by ear and once played in an orchestra in Europe. Musicians would come to his shop to jam.
