Stefano Cardoselli (1971) is an Italian comic book artist and writer who currently resides in the small coastal town of Orbetello in Tuscany, Italy.
As a professional comic book artist, Stefano Cardoselli began his career in 2000. In his more than two-decade-long career, he has worked with many publishers including Heavy Metal Magazine, 2000 AD, Simon & Schuster, Mad Cave Studios, Scout Comics, Antarctic Press, and Source Point Press among others. He has also worked for Sergio Bonelli Editore and Panini Comics in Italy.[1]
In 2022, Cardoselli received the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel.[2] In 2025, he was awarded the Carlo Boscarato Prize for Best Artist by the Treviso Comic Book Festival.[3]
Career
Heavy Metal Magazine
The first appearance in a professional periodical came in 2000 in Heavy Metal Magazine. He continued to work there. Throughout the next two decades there were several more of his stories in the magazine: The Disco Brothers in 2004, Soul Crusher and Scenes from the Border in the next year, and The Chronicles of Dust and Bones in 2014.
Kevin Eastman – a co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and, for many years, an editor at Heavy Metal Magazine – said the following about Cardoselli's works:
I HATE this guy! I've only published everything he's sent me! I think he can draw his ass off, and look forward to his next contribution.[citation needed]
2000 AD
A creator of Tales of Telguuth series in [[2000 AD (comics)|2000 AD]], Steve Moore died in March 2014. In the following year Rebellion published a collection of his work as a memorial edition, where Cardoselli was an artist.
The introduction was written by Alan Moore, who made his debut in a 2000 AD book in about two decades.[4] It was published on March 11, 2015.[5]
Independent Legions Publishing and Bram Stoker Award
Several horror graphic novels featuring Cardoselli had been created by him in collaboration with the Italian writer Alessandro Manzetti for Independent Legions Publishing. Two of them, Her Life Matters (Or Brooklyn Frankenstein) and Kraken Inferno: The Last Hunt, received nominations for the Bram Stoker Awards but did not win any of them.[1]
But the third one won. The Inhabitant of the Lake, published in 2021, won the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel at StokerCon 2022 in Denver, Colorado. The award-winner was revealed on May 14, 2022.[2][6]
Mad Cave Studios
Don't Spit in the Wind is Cardoselli's first self-owned title for Mad Cave Studios. He created and illustrated the four-issue story where the planet Earth is no longer habitable and a group of scavengers has to clean it up. The first issue appeared on March 29, 2023.[7]
The illustrations were compared to Moebius and Geoff Darrow.[8] At the same time, in one of his interviews, Cardoselli mentioned all these artists along with Enki Bilal and Frank Miller among his inspirations. Moreover, he also mentioned films by Ridley Scott, Fritz Lang, and David Cronenberg, saying they had an influence on his perception of imagery.[9]
Next came two other projects with the writer Francesca Perillo, released through Mad Cave. It is the romance comic called Love Me: A Romance Story, consisting of four issues published in 2023 and 2024, and the science-fiction series titled Where Does the Rainbow End?, which began its release in 2026.[10]
Artistic style
Heavy line art. Sci-Fi backgrounds. A penchant for horror and dystopia. This describes the bulk of Cardoselli's body of work.
Some of his inspirations as a visual artist are Ridley Scott, Fritz Lang, David Cronenberg, Clive Barker and Stephen King.[8] Critics have compared his artwork to that of Moebius, Geoff Darrow, and Frank Miller.[8][9]
