Stefano Rota (born 1 October 1961), known by his stage name Michael Righeira, is an Italian singer, songwriter, musician and actor.[1] He is best known as the keyboardist and backing vocalist of the Italo disco duo Righeira.

Early life[edit]

Stefano Rota was born on 1 October 1961 in Turin, Italy.

Rota attended Albert Einstein Scientific High School in Turin, where he met schoolmate Stefano Righi for the first time.

Career[edit]

Righeira[edit]

In 1983, Rota started performing together with Stefano Righi as a duo under the name Righeira. They signed a contract with La Bionda, and had their first hit, Vamos a la playa, during the spring of 1983. With the La Bionda brothers as their producers, they had a chance to experiment freely with their own sound.[2] As a duo, both members had their part in the songwriting, even though Righi wrote most of their songs. Rota is the co-writer of several of the duo's early hits, including "Hey Mama" and "L'estate sta finendo".

In the autumn of 1983, Righeira released the single "No Tengo Dinero", co-written by Rota together with La Bionda. It was included on the duo's debut album Righeira, alongside "Vamos a la playa", and ultimately established their reputation as a dance duo.[3] Rota came with the idea of the song and wrote the first lyrics, which was later completed by La Bionda, after gaining criticism. Righeira produced a short promotional film for the song.

After Righeira's first seperation in 1992, Rota began studying law and literature. He studied from 1992 until 2000, a year after the duo had started performing again.[4]

Acting[edit]

In addition to his work with Righeira, Rota has worked as an actor. In 1985, Stefano Rota co-starred together with Enrico Beruschi in a sketch for the Italian television variety show Drive In, broadcast on Italia 1. Three years later, in 1988, he appeared on the television show La Tv delle ragazze together with the actress Maria Amelia Monti.[5]

Personal life[edit]

Relationships[edit]

Loredana Cazzola[edit]

In 1990, Rota married Loredana Cazzola, a businesswoman from Schio.[6] The couple first met in 1988.[7]

Stefano Righi[edit]

Rota first met Righi while attending Albert Einstein Scientific High School in Turin. At the beginning of their musical career, the two had grown tired of their "banal friendship" and ultimately became "musical brothers" once they started touring.[8] In later years, the two duo members grew apart.[9][10]
