Stelios Bekiros (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.; born in Athens, Greece) is a Greek AI pioneer, engineer, computer scientist, economist and academic. He holds a Chair Full Professorship of Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Economics at the School of Management and Economics, University of Turin (UniTo).[1] He has previously held the Joint Chair Full Professorship of FinTech, Econometrics and Data Science at the University of Malta and the University of Turin (2021–2024) and was elected Full Professor of Economic Statistics at the University of Padua (2019).[2] Bekiros is the founder of APOCALYPSE Research Foundation and the developer of the Global Apocalypse Index and of the system APOCALYPSE: A Big-Data Provenance-Anchored Multi-Agentic Artificial Intelligence Early Warning System (EWS) for Real-Time Monitoring, Nowcasting and Forecasting of Global Catastrophe Risk.[3]
Professor Bekiros's research spans machine learning, artificial general intelligence, econometrics, blockchain technology, DeFi, FinTech, big-data science, the IoT, quantum chaos and econophysics, hypergame theory, epigenomics, computational medicine, bioinformatics, extreme and Bayesian statistics, complex systems, quantum and statistical mechanics, control theory, electrical engineering, meteorology, earthquake science, brain and cognitive sciences, health economics, neuroscience, financial engineering, military studies, legal studies and ethics, and cyber-security. As of 2026 his work had received more than 16,000 citations according to Google Scholar, with an h-index of 67 and an i10-index of 217.[4] He has held three Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowships (2011, 2013, 2015) and one Max Weber Fellowship (2008–2009) of the European Commission, the four most competitive postdoctoral fellowships of the EU social- and natural-sciences ecosystem.[2][5]
Education
Bekiros received his Dipl.-Ing / BEng (1998) and MEng (1999) in Electrical and Computer Engineering — with specializations in robotics, control systems, software engineering, machine learning and artificial intelligence — from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).[2] The NTUA degree is recognized by the institution itself as equivalent to a Master's degree awarded by English universities.[6] He obtained an MSc in Decision Sciences (2001), specializing in artificial intelligence, financial engineering, operational research and statistics, and his PhD in FinAI, Big Data Science and Machine Learning Econometrics (2005, conferred with the highest distinction), from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB).[2][7] He also holds an MMUS in music theory and guitar performance from the Experimental Conservatory School of Music in Athens (1999).[2]
Professor Bekiros holds four Italian National Scientific Habilitations (ASN-MIUR) at the Full Professor (Prima Fascia) level, certified by official attestations of the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) issued in February 2025:[8]

Career
Early positions
Bekiros was Executive Project Director at NTUA's Decision Support Systems Laboratory (1998–1999) on the EC ESPRIT/CHIC-II programme.[2] Between 1999 and 2002 he worked as an engineering and financial consultant with Singular S.A. and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Greece, the latter on the Hellenic Ministry of Education's participation in the EU Operational Programme "Information Society" under the 3rd Community Support Framework.[2] From 2002 to 2004 he was Financial Consultant at the Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE / Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation), and from 2005 to 2007 a joint Research Fellow at CSE, Philips College and CRPF/AUEB.[2]
In July–December 2006 he served as Assistant Professor of Finance and Financial Markets at the Utrecht School of Economics (USE), Utrecht University.[2] Between 2006 and 2008 he was Research Fellow at the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics in Economics and Finance (CeNDEF), Department of Quantitative Economics, University of Amsterdam (UvA), funded by a Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) project on information flows in financial markets.[2]
European Commission fellowships
In early 2008 Dr. Bekiros was appointed Quant/Financial Engineer and Postdoctoral Fellow at the European Institute for Statistics, Probability, Stochastic Operations Research and its Applications (EURANDOM) of the Eindhoven University of Technology, working on the European Investment Bank-funded EIBURS project on multivariate jump-Lévy modelling of credit risk (joint with KU Leuven and the University of Tilburg).[2] Between 2008 and 2017 he was successively awarded four European Commission research fellowships hosted at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence: the Max Weber Programme (2008–2009), and three Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowships (FP7-PEOPLE-2009-IEF, 2010–2011; FP7-PEOPLE-2012-CIG, 2012–2015; H2020-MSCA-IF NAUTILUS, 2015).[2] During 2009–2010 he was concurrently Senior Officer/Advisor at the Centre of Planning and Economic Research (KEPE) attached to the Hellenic Ministry of Finance.[2]
Italian and UK chairs
In 2019 Bekiros was elected Full Professor of Economic Statistics ("Professore Ordinario") at the Department of Statistical Sciences of the University of Padua.[2] From January 2021 to September 2024 he held the Joint Chair Full Professorship of FinTech, Econometrics and Data Science at the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy of the University of Malta, held jointly with the School of Management and Economics of the University of Turin.[2] Since February 2023 he has been Chair Full Professor of Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Econometrics at the School of Management and Economics, University of Turin.[2] He has also held a Senior Fellow and Visiting Professor position at the LSE Health Centre, London School of Economics (2021–2023), and a Research Senior Affiliated Fellow in Financial Engineering at IPAG Business School in Paris (2014–2024).[2] He is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Rimini Centre for Economic Analysis (University of Bologna) since 2013 and an ADEMU-affiliated researcher and Senior Visiting Fellow at the European University Institute since 2015.[2]
He has held Visiting Fellowships at the University of Cambridge (2014, 2017), Queen Mary University of London (2011), LUISS Guido Carli in Rome (2013), Linköping University (2016), the European University Institute (2011, 2015–2018), IPAG Business School (2014–2017) and the University of Amsterdam (2007, 2010).[2]

Since September 2024 Bekiros has served on the Elector Registry Board of the Academy of Athens Center for Natural Hazards Research and Crisis Management, and is a Senior Member of the same Center.[2]

EU and major research projects
From January 2023 to June 2024 Bekiros was Principal Investigator on the Horizon-CL4-2022-DATA-01 project "Promoting and Incentivising Federated, Trusted, and Fair Sharing and Trading of Interoperable Data ASsets" (PISTIS), a 104-partner consortium coordinated by the Fraunhofer Society.[2] He has also led or participated in projects funded by Horizon 2020, FP7, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), the European Investment Bank (EIB / EIBURS), LABEX ReFi (Paris), the Hellenic Financial Literacy Institute (HFLI), the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation and the Hellenic Ministry of Development.[2] Since 2017 he has also acted as host-institution supervisor for incoming Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellows, including the awarded grants MSCA-PF-GAP101065977 and MSCA-PF-GAP101065462.[2] Over his career he has supervised more than 20 postdoctoral and PhD researchers as principal or co-supervisor and more than 30 master's theses.[2]

Professor Dr. Stelios Bekiros has been listed annually from 2020 through 2025 in the World's Top 2% Scientists ranking, an Elsevier/Stanford citation-impact study compiled by John P. A. Ioannidis and colleagues.[9][10] In the 2025 edition he ranks within the top 0.2% of all listed scientists worldwide and at position 10 of 6,491 authors in his primary sub-field.[2]

APOCALYPSE Research Foundation and Global Apocalypse Index
In 2026 Bekiros founded the APOCALYPSE™ Research Foundation, under whose auspices he developed the Global Apocalypse Index (GAI, GAI-x, GAI-y) and the system "APOCALYPSE: A Big-Data Provenance-Anchored Multi-Agentic Artificial Intelligence Early Warning System (EWS) for Real-Time Monitoring, Nowcasting and Forecasting of Global Catastrophe Risk".[3][14]
He is the inventor on two globally recognised patents (under the Paris Convention), filed under the auspices of the Irish Foundation: IE PTIE20260000000318 (APOCALYPSE v1) and IE PTIE20260000000354 (APOCALYPSE v2).[15]
Blockchain and decentralised finance

.), an early reference work on the application of non-fungible tokens and tokenisation in art, music, real estate and decentralised finance.[2] His applied work in this area has touched the design of algorithmic stablecoins, smart contracts integrating artificial intelligence, decentralised exchanges, automated market makers and synthetic derivatives on the Solana blockchain, prediction-market governance, multi-chain protocols, and big-data oracles for decentralised finance ecosystems.[2]

Personal life
Outside academia Stelios Bekiros holds an MMUS in music theory and guitar performance (jazz, classical and fusion).[2] He is fluent in English, Italian, Spanish and Greek.[2] He completed military service in the Hellenic Army in the armor (black berets) and artillery (blue berets) branches, trained for active combatant unrestricted service (I-1, equivalent to 1-A in the United States system).[2] He is an accomplished Black Belt Dan Ju-Jitsu master certified by the Ju-Jitsu International Federation (JJIF), a Mixed Martial Arts instructor, an ISU-certified self-defence instructor of the International StreetFighting Union, and a disciple of the DAS street-fighting system; he has certified seminar training in Aikido, Muay Thai and the Israeli Krav-Maga combat system.[2]
