Stepan Sigetiy
Stepan Sigetiy (March 5 1926 – January 3 2014) was a Ukrainian painter and member of the Transcarpathian painting school.
Biography
Stepan Sigetiy was born on March 5, 1926 in the village of Oleshnyk of the Vynogradiv district of Transcarpathia. He died on January 3, 2014 in Uzhhorod, Transcarpathia.[1]
Paintings
Stepan Sigetiy studied in painters Adalbert Erdely, Anton Kashshay and Zoltan Sholtes.[2] Stepan Sigetiy during his life painted more than 100 different paintings, including wooden churches and landscapes. The most famous among them is the series of paintings of wooden churches of the Carpathian region, mainly of Transcarpathia.
Stepan Sigetiy is the first Transcarpathian artist to paint the wooden churches of Transcarpathia as a whole series to record their unique cultural and sacred heritage.[1][3][4]
He depicted more than 60 different wooden churches, mostly Greek Catholic churches. The artist's works are distinguished by their originality and uniqueness[1]. One of his most famous paintings is the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin (1927), in village Kryva, 1986.[5] Unique beauty of sacred architecture, wild landscapes, optimistic moods, and positive emotions are features of Stepan Sigetiy's paintings[1].
Exhibitions
Since 1979, Stepan Sigetiy has participated in various exhibitions not only in Transcarpathia, Ukraine, but also in Armenia, Slovakia, Hungary and the USA. His personal exhibitions were in Uzhhorod in 1990 and 1996 under the title "Monuments of wooden architecture of Transcarpathia of the XIV-XVII centuries and landscapes". In 2001, dedicated to his 75th birthday, he provide exhibition "Road to the Temple". For his 80th birthday, he provide exhibition "Golden Crosses in Blue Skies".[1][6]
Awards
Stepan Sigetiy was awarded in 1981 with the title of Honored Worker of Culture of the Ukraine. He was also awarded in 1999 with a degree by the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III of Ukraine. In 2009, he was awarded by a bishop with a letter "as an expression of gratitude for the preservation of the cultural heritage of our region under the Carpathians".[6]
