Stephan Franck is a French/American animator, writer, animation director, and comics creator. He is mostly know for his work as a supervising animator on ,The Iron Giant, for Co-creating the animated TV show Corneil & Bernie, and for his graphic novel series Silver....[1]. He is the brother of animation producer Emmanuel Franck.
Career
Animation
Franck was a Supervising animator on Brad Bird’s animated cult classic The Iron Giant[2][3] for Warner Brothers Feature Animation. In 2000, he worked with Adam Sandler, supervising the animation of the animated feature Eight Crazy Nights[4][5], and was at Disney Feature Animation for most of the decade. In 2003, Franck also co-created the animated TV show Corneil & Bernie (AKA Watch My Chops) with brother Emmanuel Franck and Emmanuel Prevost. The series was produced by the French production company Millimages and aired in the United States on Nicktoons[6]. In 2008, Franck served as a story artist on the animated feature film Despicable me [7] and on the sci-fi animated movie 9. In 2013, he was able to combine his background in 2D animation and his childhood love of the Smurfs[8] [9] to direct the television special The Smurfs: The Legend of Smurfy Hollow[10] for Sony Pictures Animation[11], which combines CGI and hand-drawn animation. The Legend of Smurfy Hollow was nominated for an Annie Award[12] for “Best director for a direct to video or TV Broadcast”. Because of its positive critical response[13] and its use 2D animation, the special stands apart from other Smurfs Sony films. While at Sony Pictures Animation, he also developed a feature film project with writer Dave Reynolds[14]. He is listed as Executive Producer on Playmobil: The Movie[15], which is announced for release in 2019[16]
Comics
Franck credits his love for comic books to growing up in his parents bookstore near Paris, France[17], and in 2014 he made his comics debut[18] with the graphic novel series Silver[19] that he both wrote and illustrated. Silver, a supernatural heist story, takes place in an original universe inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and follows a group of conmen and a Van Helsing descendent trying to steal a mythical treasure from Dracula’s castle[17]. The first volume was released in 2014 and the 4th and final volume is set for release in November 2018 [20]. The critical response for Silver has been positive, with Newsarama [21], Nerdist[22], NPR[23] and other news sources giving the series positive reviews. Silver was also nominated for the 2014 Russ Manning Award and the 2015 Geekie Award for Best Comic Or Graphic Novel[24]. During New York Comic Con 2017, Deadline Hollywood reported that writer Andrew Cosby was attached to pen a movie adaptation.[25]. In 2018, Silver was one of the titles participating in Diamond Comic Distributors’ Free Comic Book Day[23]
In 2017, Franck expended the Silver universe with Rosalynd[26], an illustrated novella and prequel to Silver. Similarly to the Silver volumes[27], Rosalynd was funded through Kickstarter, and was revealed as a surprise companion to the Silver Volume 3 Kickstarter campaign [28][29]. Unlike Silver, which presents itself as traditional sequential art, Rosalynd adopts a stream-of-consciousness form of narrative that is more abstract and poetic in nature. While Rosalynd is the fictional diary of Rosalynd "Sledge" Van Helsing, one of Silver's main characters, it is also a metafiction about the history of Franck's family, as they crossed Europe in the early 20th century fleeing Jewish persecutions[30].
Theirs was a life perpetually lived as strangers, never knowing when the community they had just settled into would eventually turn on them. And it always did.[31].
The character of Rosalynd herself was in part inspired by Franck's mother Francine August Franck[32], who was hidden as a child during World War 2 to escape the Holocaust, and was saved thanks to the bravery of Yvette Henri, who in 1999 was recognized as Righteous Among The Nations[33].[31]
After my grandparents were deported, my mom and her younger siblings had to survive—often on their own. Hidden children on the road. Processing the horrors of the world through their somewhat innocent eyes. I grew up hearing these stories (…), and somehow, Francine became Rosalynd.[31]
