Stephanie Hegarty
Stephanie Hegarty is the BBC's Global Population correspondent, a role in which she examines changes in demographics and migration patterns and what impact they have on the world.[1]
Career
Hegarty has reported on issues including pro-natalism, Peru's uncontacted tribes and Ukraine's refugee crisis.[2][3] Her work has taken her to countries including Nigeria, Peru, Ukraine and the United States of America. Prior to joining the BBC in 2012, Hegarty worked at The New Statesman[4].
Her work has been cited in scientific journals. Her report on The myth of the eight-hour sleep[5] was referenced by Niall Boyce in 2023.[6] Her report on a Gaza Mum’s Fight to Feed Her Baby[7] was referenced by Bayan Abusneineh in 2025.[8]
Personal life
Hegarty was born in Ireland and graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2006.[9]
