Stephen Crowe (composer)
Stephen Crowe is an English composer of chamber operas and experimental music.
His work has been performed internationally and notable London performances have been at Camden Arts Centre, Courtauld Gallery, Kings Place, The National Portrait Gallery, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Riverside Studios, Tate Britain and The Vortex.
His stage work The Francis Bacon Opera won the Hilton Edwards Award at the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival in May 2013. After performances at London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Cambridge and Berlin it was described as both "pretentious nonsense" [1] and "avoiding the pitfalls of pretentiousness"[2].
Crowe's output has been noted by critics of art, theatre and classical music in publications including Exeunt Magazine,[3] This is Tomorrow,[4] What's on Stage[5] and Opera Magazine.[6] The Independent newspaper described his work as "The future of new opera".[7]
As a guitarist he performs free improvisation on an irregular basis in London and Berlin.
In 2013 he formed 'StreisBAND' a hardcore Barbra Streisand covers band, which received warm praise from Henry Rollins.
