Stephen Grady OBE (b. 1925) is a French

born British member of the French Resistance during the Second World War.[1]

Born to an English father and a French mother the family lived at Nieppe in Northern France. It was there that his father was a head gardener with the Imperial War Graves Commission.[2]

After studying a French schools, in 1937 Stephen was sent to study in England. He stayed there in Ramsgate with his grandmother. After two terms he returned to France and was enrolled in the British Memorial School at Ypres, Belgium.[2]

Although he was a French national Stephen felt 'fiercely British'. He described his feelings on nationality -[2]

I was hyper-patriotic. I think it was because I was brought up in France. I felt I was different. I was British. The British to me were God.
