Stephen Odhiambo Ogweno (born February 28, 1996) is a Kenyan health practitioner and NCD advocate. He is the founder CEO of two health startups Stowelink Inc and Lifesten Health.
Early life and education
Stephen was born on February 28, 1996, in Kisumu, Kenya. Reportedly, he had a troubled childhood due to health issues like obesity and GERD.[1] He attended the Xaverian Primary School in Kisumu, where he later took the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2010. Then, he joined the Kanyawanga High School to earn the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2014.
While graduating from Kenyatta University in population health during 2015–2019, Stephen also found an opportunity to study at the Cambridge University Institute of Sustainability Leadership, South Africa. In 2019, he earned short scholarships to take specialized courses at Harvard University, where he studied the programs for Emerging Communities and Strengthening Community Health Workers in 2019. In 2020, he won the Commonwealth Scholarship, making himself a candidate for a major in public health from the University of Manchester in 2023.[2][3][4]
Career
With an educational background in public health and also influenced by his personal experience with non-communicable diseases, Stephen focused on a career as a health professional. In 2015, he established a health organization Stowelink Inc in Kenya to grow awareness about global health challenges.[5] The organization launched Project Alpha in 2016 to raise awareness for cancer. As a health practitioner and NCD advocate, gradually, his work gained attention from the national health sector. Later, he joined several local health bodies like the national NCDs Intersectoral Coordinating Committee and the YHP Kenya Committee.[3][6][7][8]
Another milestone in his career was starting a collaboration with the WHO's Global Coordinating Mechanism as a member of the NCD labs initiative. He is also a member of the advisory board for the global NCD Alliance.[3][6][9]
In 2020, Stephen, together with Kenyan filmmaker Paul Mukoma, developed an NCD's online training course for the general public.[10][8] He was one of the "20 new emerging social change leaders for the 2020 Dalai Lama Fellows program", selected by the University of Virginia, where he presented his "COZ I’M HAPPY" project.[11]
In 2021, together with Peace Iraguha, Stephen launched another health company Lifesten Health. The company promotes health awareness through incentive-based programs, especially in Kigali, Rwanda.[12][1]
