Stephen Taylor is a professional drummer and educator. He is the founder of the online drum lesson website Stephen's Drum Shed, has on-demand drum lessons offered by cable providers like Comcast.[1], and has toured with artists like Danielle Peck and Lovers and Liars. He studied at the University of Southern Mississippi where he received a Jazz Studies degree. Along with his online drum lesson website, Stephen has also been a featured educator for companies like DRUM! Magazine[2], Vic Firth, and Zildjian[3].

He currently lives in Nashville, TN with his wife, two sons, and daughter.

Early Life[edit]

Stephen was born in Port Gibson, Mississippi on April 26, 1981. His father was a preacher and mother was a worship minister. He spent most of his childhood life in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He was home schooled up until the 9th grade when he began attending Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, Mississippi where he graduated in 1999.

Education[edit]

Stephen began drumming at age 14 and his first professional gig was at age 16. Stephen's early professional gigs included stage shows, variety shows, dinner theaters, cover bands, original bands, and even performing drum set with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. During his high school years he studied with Henrique De Almeida (former Associate Professor of Percussion at Berklee College of Music) and Jeff Mills. Both Henrique and Jeff are former students of Alan Dawson.

After graduating high school, Stephen enrolled as a Jazz Studies major at the University of Southern Mississippi. At age 19, three semesters into college, Stephen took a break from his education to pursue drumming full time. He was a house drummer at several venues on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. From age 19 to 22 Stephen performed full-time at venues like The Famous Door and Bourbon Street Blues Company.

At age 22 Stephen went back to the University of Southern Mississippi on a Jazz Studies scholarship. While studying at the University of Southern Mississippi Stephen studied under Dr. John Wooten, Harrell Bosarge, and Larry Panella. Stephen graduated with a Jazz Studies degree from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Career[edit]

Stephen's first full-time drumming gig was at The Famous Door on Bourbon Street. While studying music in college Stephen also kept busy gigging in the Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana areas performing with groups like the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, mobile Symphony Orchestra, blues artists like Vastai Jackson, Tommy "T-Bone" Pruitt, cover bands, and other acts in the greater Mississippi area.

Once graduating from college Stephen moved to Nashville, TN to continue his career in music. Since moving to Nashville, Stephen has toured with several independent and major label artists including: Danielle Peck, Jason Jones, Meshach Jackson, and many others. In late 2008, Stephen began playing with the band Lovers and Liars, who were later signed to Universal Republic Records[4] from 2010 to 2011.

In 2011 Stephen began a YouTube channel where he began posting drum lessons and tutorials. That YouTube channel later grew into his online drum lesson membership site Stephen's Drum Shed (stephensdrumshed.com) where he offers online drum education for drummers of any skill level.

Along with his own YouTube channel and membership site, Stephen has had his lessons featured on many platforms. He has had lessons featured by companies like Zildjian[5], Vic Firth[6], and DRUM! Magazine. In 2017 he also launched an on-demand drum lesson cable TV channel that provides his drum lessons for cable networks like Comcast, Bell, U-Verse, and Frontier Communications[7]
