Biography

Steve Held was born in 1960. At two months old, he was adopted into the home of Jean Cathey and McCulla "Cap" Hough of Broadus, Montana. He graduated from Powder River County District High School in 1978, and attended Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana and San Diego State University in San Diego, California. After two years of graduate work at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, California, he spent two seasons at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts, and went on to a nearly 30-year career in acting.[2] In 2005, he returned to Broadus, Montana and raised top 1% Angus cattle and owned world champion horses. He currently resides in rural Powder River County, Montana. Steve Held is also the father of Rikki Held, the lead plaintiff of Held v. Montana, the first climate-related constitutional lawsuit to go to trial in the United States.[3][4]

On March 1, 2024, Held announced his candidacy for the U.S. House seat in Montana's 2nd congressional district. In a press release from Held's campaign, he is described as a fourth-generation Montanan, rancher and businessman. “Held is running for office to get things done, clean up corruption, pass a farm bill that supports family farmers and ranchers, and be an actual representative for Montanans in Washington, D.C.,” the release stated. According to the release, Held's campaign will focus on supporting family farmers and ranchers, lowering healthcare costs, solving the immigration crisis, protecting Montana's environment and advocating for tribal nations and Native American communities.[5]
