Steve Nison
Steve Nison (born 3 March 1951) is a financial trader and is considered the pioneer of modern-day Candlestick charts.[1] He introduced rice merchant Homma Munehisa and his concept candlestick charts to the Western world in his book Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques. Today, candlestick charts are commonly used in financial markets around the world.[2]
Nison graduated from Brooklyn College with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1974. In 1980, he received his Master of Business Administration in Finance and Investments from Baruch College.
Career
Nison began his career as an analyst with a small commodities consulting firm. [3] While working at Merrill Lynch, he introduced the concept of candlestick charting. [4] Nison introduced Candlestick patterns to the Western world, elucidating candlestick charting tactics from original Japanese sources and Japanese traders. His book Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques explained how to apply the candlestick method to Western economics.[5] According to Thom Hartle of Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities, candlestick formations gained international acclaim in December 1989 from an article published by Nison on the candlestick formation. Since then, Nison has publicly spoken on candlestick charting on major television networks, such as the Financial News Network and CNBC.[6] Nison taught classes about candlestick charting at the New York Institute of Finance.[4]
Nison has written three books Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques, Beyond Candlesticks, and The Candlestick Course—which have been translated into 20 different languages.[7]
Nison’s work has been included in financial publications including The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, MarketWatch, and The Street. He has demonstrated his trading strategies to traders and analysts across multiple countries and international institutions including The World Bank and The Federal Reserve.[7]
